Show Low reputedly got its name as a result of a card game. Two ranchers, Marion Clark and Corydon Cooley, felt the neighborhood was getting too crowded, so they played a card game called Seven Up to see who would move. Low card won the hand. Clark said to Cooley, If you show low, you win. Cooley drew the deuce of clubs and said, Show low it is and Show Low it was.
Show Low is known as the gateway to the beautiful White Mountains. The highway between Show Low and Overgaard was not even paved until the mid-1970s. In 2002, the Rodeo-Chedeski fire raged in this area, destroying 500,000 acres, the worst forest fire in Arizona history. |
